As an entrepreneur, rejection will become a part of your lifestyle.
Now I know that you have been rejected before; how did you handle it?
- Did you lash back?
- Or maybe you crawled into a closet and cried?
- Did you resort to manipulation or blackmail?
Or did you just accept the rejection and moved on down the path?
Hopefully, you resorted to the last answer, but don’t feel guilty if you used any of the other methods (which probably didn’t work).
I am going to give you 9 tips on handling rejection. It is a lot better that you learn these items here. After all, you could be trying to sell subscriptions to magazines door to door in Atlanta or telemarketing for siding salesmen in Omaha.
Those people have to be reinforced with rejection-free skin!
Use these tips and you will be able to accept rejection knowing you are that much closer to acceptance.
Rejection Tip #1: Go Ahead And Allow Yourself A Moment
Let’s face it, rejection sucks!
Take a moment and go where you need to go and let the emotional outburst flow.
Just don’t allow others to see this. But if you need to
- Shed a couple of tears
- Break a toothpick into 30 small pieces
- Mutter a couple choice cuss words
Give yourself that moment.
But…
Take a little longer moment and meditate on positives. I suggest the negative that just spilled out you gets doubled with positive affirmations.
And get back to your role as the entrepreneur who will win!
Rejection Tip #2: A Certain Amount Of Nos Lead To A Yes
Remember that for every person that says no, you are now that much closer to the person who will say yes.
If you keep this attitude, I can guarantee you the yes will come soon.
Rejection Tip #3: Ask Some Questions In A Professional Manner
You want to discover if the rejection has merit.
While I am not saying you should “badger” the person, just simply ask why they said no to the offer. By knowing why, you may be able to offer concessions or show the person some other benefits.
If nothing else, knowing why they gave you rejection will help you revise your proposal or strategy before approaching the next prospect.
Rejection Tip #4: Do Not Get Defensive
Rejection is not an attack against you, so why get defensive?
Many people are so used to salespeople automatically getting defensive when they are rejected that it actually surprises them when you do not show any defensiveness.
In many cases, if you walk away with a smile accepting the no, the person will wonder why you are not reacting like 98% of the others.
Often, they rethink the offer and assume they may be missing out.
Hopefully, you left them contact information because there is a chance the prospect may change their mind.
Rejection Tip #5: Build A Strong Support System
I believe I should have put this tip at the top of the list.
If you surround yourself with positive people who can lift you up and give you support through those difficult moments, and celebrate with you when things are going great, rejection will be much less of an issue.
Rejection Tip #6: Let It Educate You
Instead of allowing rejection a negative effect, allow it to reflect a positive experience.
Learn from it.
- Is your presentation enjoyable?
- Are you in professional attire?
- Do you smile?
- Are you listening?
After any rejections, try to discover one aspect you could change that may help.
Rejection Tip #7: Don’t Stop!
Some “experts” will tell you to take a long break from it all after a rejection…
I disagree!
I look at it like learning how to ride a bicycle.
- You fall down and skin your knee.
- You may yell or cry a bit. (Tip #1)
- Mom puts a bandage on the knee. (Tip #5)
- You get back on and keep learning.
As you move forward without stopping, you will find the rejection is not nearly as disheartening as it was when you first started.
Rejection Tip #8: Follow Up
When it comes to business, I have found that no is not forever. In many cases, it means not right now.
Just checking in and following up with prospects may catch them at the moment when no turns to yes.
