When we create content…
- Blog posts
- Social media posts
Isn’t one of our primary desires that the content goes viral?
Of course it is!
But how do we create content that will go viral?
I will tell you immediately that there is no absolute. But you can use methods that have worked for others. The content you create needs to “grab” the person and entice them to share it.
There was an interesting study done by Jonah Berger and Katherine Milkman at the Wharton School of Business. You can find the complete research study here.
Using controlled means, these 2 found these important facts:
- People tend to share content with the hope of gaining a higher social standing.
- For the most part, positive content goes viral more than negative content.
- Content that creates sad feelings tends to be less viral.
- Emotional arousal is the key to social sharing. The more aroused, the better chance the person will share.
- In regards to negative viral content, it is generally content that causes anger.
- And wit positive viral content, surprise, humor and awe is shared most in that order.
Keep this study in mind as you create content.
In this post, I am going to share a wide variety of advice on how to create viral content. These methods have worked, so I suggest you use them and see if they work for you.
Viral Content Plays On Emotions
Just think about the content you are most apt to share… It created an emotional response didn’t it?
Maybe you were
- Jumped with fear
When you pull emotional responses from the people who view your content, they WILL share that content with other people they know will feel the same emotions.
Viral Content Pushes Boundaries
I recently came across a video that I noticed had been viewed over 2,000,000 times. It seemed to just be a girl swinging from a rope to launch into a lake.
What made such a video go viral?
Suddenly the surprise of your life!!!
A monstrous fish jumps out of the water and swallows her in midair.
Just like many others, I believe I watched that scene at least 10 times. Sure it was a manipulated video, but it went viral because of the surprise behind it and the boundaries the person pushed.
Breaking News Tends To Become Viral Content
If you can find a way to integrate breaking news into your content, you are giving that content better odds of going viral.
Just stay on top of Google Trends to discover breaking news that is “hot.”
Scan The Net For Potentially Viral Content
This is one of the top methods the best of the best use. Just scan the web for those stories that are not going well. Look for a way you can take that story (or multiple stories) and develop them into a viral fan fest.
Be willing to look at the websites on pages 9, 17, 22, etc… of Google.
You will be amazed as to how much material you can get to manipulate into something that goes viral.
Viral Content Often Contains A Story
People love a good story and even a mediocre story.
Learn to use stories within your content and you will find those stories going viral if you are able to tell stories that grab emotions.
You Have Approximately 8 Seconds
The internet is full of humans with an “I want it NOW” attitude. They don’t have the patience to wait, so you have about 8 seconds to grab their attention or they will leave.
And after you do grab their attention, don’t let up. You have to keep that attention.
If you do, they will share.
Content That Teaches Often Goes Viral
If you have the ability to teach your readers or watchers something they don’t know and will help them, they will stay engaged and they will also share that content with other people they know.
I know that many people want to be able to create viral content, so I predict this post will go viral.
Inspiration Often Goes Viral
I mentioned earlier how positive trumps negative. And these days, people on the internet desperately want to be inspired.
If you can create content that inspires, you are giving that content excellent chances of going viral.
One other important fact is the timing of your post. If you are sending it live at 2 AM where your primary readers are, many will be sleeping. Wouldn’t it be better to send it out during the day.
By the way, Tuesday is the best posting day.
