You may find some network marketers who will tell you that you cannot motivate your downline. Personally I disagree and I also believe that it is a responsibility we carry.
But motivating discouraged people is not easy.
There can be a number of factors that can cause discouragement for a MLM business owner…
- personal problems
- discontinued products
- compensation plan changes
- rejection
- etc…
But as a leader, you do have the power and ability to help; you have the power to motivate a discouraged downline and I am going to share 5 methods how to do so.
Motivate A Discouraged Downline #1: With Your Actions
This is absolutely the #1 method to motivate your downline!
Believe me, each and everyone of your downline members are watching you. So if you are consistently prospecting, recruiting, following up and training, they will take notice.
Believe me, actions speak much louder than words.
Motivate A Discouraged Downline #2: Weekly Training Calls
I say weekly here, but it could be less or more. It really does not matter how often you give these training calls. What matters is the “meat” you provide your downline during these calls.
Some primary areas you may want to cover are:
- Goal setting
- Company and product knowledge areas that will give them the “upper hand”
- How to properly promote
- Scripts for face to face and phone
- The proper method to set appointments
- How to train their downline
- Etc…

Motivate A Discouraged Downline #3: Build Another Downline
This comes straight from my friend and Network Marketing Rock Star, Ray Higdon.
The fact is, we can give our downline all the tools and support, but if they don’t want to be motivated, they won’t.
So we have discovered that if we begin to build a new downline, many of the un-motivated people in the previous downline will suddenly become motivated.
Why?
Because there is a natural thing in humans to not allow someone with less experience to get ahead or be better.
As your original downline sees you building a new downline, be prepared. They will probably start taking massive action.
Motivate A Discouraged Downline #4: One-On-One’s
Getting together with a discouraged or disgruntled downline member over a cup of coffee or a lunch is a good way to first, find out why they are feeling this way and secondly, give them all the reasons they should not feel that way.
And while you are together, why not spend 1 or 2 hours prospecting?
Show him/her your little “nuances” and anyone who agrees to a presentation, give to your team member. And, be there during the presentation.
This shows your downline member that you DO care and will support them.
Motivate A Discouraged Downline #5: Give Praise And Recognition
Whenever a downline member reaches a milestone you should praise them and recognize them publicly. By doing so, you not only help motivate that person, but it also inspires the rest of your downline.
No matter if it is recruiting 1 person, 8 people or providing an idea for the business or company itself, make sure to praise and recognize them and you will see amazing things happen.
Conclusion
I want to go back to the start of this post… I thought a bit about what I said and the fact is, we really do not have the ability to motivate anyone. We can only give them the tools to motivate themselves. And we often do that by inspiration.
So put yourself in your downline’s shoes… Would you be inspired by you?
Remember, the first person who needs to be motivated is the person you see when you look in the mirror. If you are motivated and you have positive energy, your downline is bound to be motivated too.
