Social intimacy makes this world spin.
While we all have those moments we just want to be alone, we have an inner need to be attached and connected to other human beings.
It may seem like some people have a natural ability to connect with others and some people would argue that it cannot be taught.
I agree to disagree with that statement!
There ARE many steps you can take that will help you connect with others.
And since recruiting into your network marketing business requires your ability to connect with other humans, I am going to give you 9 tips on connecting with others.
They are in no particular order, so I suggest you print them off and allow these tips to help you.
Connecting With Others Tip #1: What Odor Will They Receive?
Maybe you just ate some garlic bread or neglected to dash deodorant this morning.
Or too much of that costly perfume can provide a wall that no one will walk through.
Just consider what that other person’s nose will receive and you will find your connection abilities more powerful.
Connecting With Others Tip #2: That First 7 Seconds
Research has shown that most people decide if they will connect with another within 7 seconds of meeting them. This means you MUST create a good first impression.
- Keep you arms uncrossed and hands out of your pockets
- Have a positive tone of voice
- Maintain eye contact
- Lean slightly toward the speaker
Connecting With Others Tip #3: A Genuine Smile
I write genuine here because there are an enormous amount of people who are good at “fake smiling.”
But most people can tell a fake smile from a genuine one.
I suggest you think on something that makes you smile… A child, your spouse or something funny.
Connecting With Others Tip #4: Be An Active Listener
You may be hearing, but are you listening?
There is a major difference. To really connect with other people, you need to listen to what they are saying. Active listening is the process of actually repeating certain words or phrases back to let the person know you are listening. You should also maintain eye contact and ask questions to keep the conversation going.
Most of all, be empathetic.
Connecting With Others Tip #5: Follow Your Word
In some cases, connecting with others is done by a prearranged meeting. If the time of the meeting is 7PM, don’t show up at 7:30, 7:15 or even 7:05.
Your word is powerful and it can build or break trust. Follow your word and you will gain a lot of respect.
Connecting With Others Tip #6: Open Your Doors
Many conversations with complete strangers seem to just stay superficial. But you are an entrepreneur… You take risks!
Try moving beyond that superficial conversation. Tell the other person something slightly personal about yourself; it doesn’t have to be too deep, but just doing this will give your new connection the okay to do the same.
When they do, you need to be empathetic and not make them regret that they told you something personal… Even if you disagree with them.
Connecting With Others Tip #7: Stay Unforgettable
There are many ways to not allow connections to forget you…
- Send an occasional happy email
- Tag them on Facebook with an inspirational message
- Send a birthday or anniversary card
- Etc…
Connecting With Others Tip #8: Do NOT Debate
Maybe you do not agree with the person’s political views, religious views or any other views.
What good will debating do?
There are times and places for debates but if you are seeking to gain and keep connections, I suggest you allow them to have their opinions and not debate with them.
Believe me, we could find something to debate about with every person we meet but debate rarely changes minds; it usually just creates animosity.
Connecting With Others Tip #9: Learn And Teach
No matter who the person you are connecting with, find something you can learn from he/she. And be willing to tell them they taught you something.
On the flip side, you can add value by teaching them something or helping to solve a problem they have.
Conclusion
Last but not least, you always must be prepared to connect with other people. Connections can sometimes happen in the oddest places.
If you are prepared, you can meet great friends and perfect business recruits.
Just follow the tips and watch your connections grow!
