Let’s all be honest here… We are human and we make mistakes. But it just makes good sense to learn from others who have already made the mistakes and can tell you how to avoid them.
So in today’s post, we will share 7 network marketing recruiting mistakes you don’t want to make.
Before we do though, check out this video I made a couple years ago and is still relevant today.
Recruiting Mistakes #1: Begging
Even if a person is actively seeking to start a home based business, the last person they would ever probably want as a sponsor is someone who begged them to join.
Network marketing IS a business and as such, you need to keep a professional business attitude. There is nothing professional about begging.
Just give the person your best presentation and if they say no, just move on to the next prospect after leaving them with a smile and “Have a great day!”
By keeping this demeanor, the person will begin to wonder if they just said no to a good opportunity.
Recruiting Mistakes #2: Not Listening
I would have to rate this as one of the top mistakes many network marketers make. They get so ingrained with talking that they forget to stop sometimes and allow the prospect to talk. And even if they do allow this to happen, the network marketer doesn’t listen and acknowledge the prospect.
I am speaking of active listening. Tune in to the prospect and hear what they are saying. In many situations, the prospect will tell you why they do need the opportunity and provide you with an “easy close.” In the same sense, if you don’t listen and try to close with benefits the prospect has no real interest in, they will realize that you did not hear a word they said and in many cases, will say no.
Recruiting Mistakes #3: Not Contacting Leads Quickly
When you get a lead, no matter where it came from, you need to contact them as quick as possible. If you don’t, there is a great chance your competitor will.
Often, leads are seeking information because they are looking for what you have. You want to “put wood on the fire while the coals are burning” Get it while it is HOT!
Speaking of leads… Rocket Recruiting has an excellent way of getting network marketing leads. They are all phone verified and are just waiting for someone like you to contact them.

Recruiting Mistakes #4: Too Much Hype
First… It is okay to be excited! But when that excitement turns into a hype-fest, you will find many sensible people walking the other way.
Again, be excited but be honest. Don’t try to give the impression that without doing some work, they will have “gobs” of money falling into their lap.
There is a lot of negative stuff about network marketing and most of it comes because of hyped-up network marketers.
Don’t be that person!
Recruiting Mistakes #5: Taking Rejection Personal
Not every person you approach will say yes. You need to understand and accept that fact. And in a large percentage of those cases, the rejection has nothing to do with you personally.
It could be fear, time, spouse, etc…
If you take rejection personally, you will be in for a difficult ride in nearly any business you are in because rejection is a normal thing.
Here is something you should consider; the last time you said no to someone, do you think they should have taken it personally? I would wager the biggest percentage of you will answer NO! You probably said no because it wasn’t in your best interest at the moment.
I rest my case!
Recruiting Mistakes #6: Using A Generic Approach
Every person is different, so why use the exact same approach with each person you meet.
We understand that you have the same ultimate goal with each person, but learn to approach people in an effort to build a relationship.
So I approach some guy who looks like he should be playing Center for the Rams. “Oh sir, those are nice shoes. They match your eyes.”
That approach may not go over too well unless he is gay and even then…
But that approach may work great with a business woman headed to work.
Do you see my point? Use common sense and approach people with transparency and truth and you will find more people feeling responsive to you.
Recruiting Mistakes #7: Making Medical Claims
I had to add this because a huge percentage of network marketing companies are in the health and wellness niche. And many companies have faced some major scrutiny because of representatives claiming their products can treat or heal.
Unless the FDA has given an absolute to the fact that a product will treat or heal, you never want to make that claim. You can say that the product supports a healthy (body organ), but you never want to state it absolutely will heal anything.
I say this to keep you and your company from facing a huge lawsuit.
