It always ticks me off when I hear of a MLM company breaking rules and getting “slapped” or shut down by the Federal Trade Commission. Each time something like that happens, it gives the industry a bad rap.
But another pet peeve is when network marketers use bad habits and unscrupulous means to sell and recruit. This also can harm the network marketing industry as a whole.
Now, I must say that the same exact things happen in traditional business structures but the key is, it normally only harms that one business. In Network Marketing, there has been a slew of negatives splashes upon the internet and in the media; much of it false. But when a representative breaks industry rules, written and unwritten, the “haters” will use that to defend their past false negatives.
That is the reason for today’s post… We need to follow a precise system that no “hater” can use against us. So I insist that you read and share this with your team so we can give network marketing the positive reputation it deserves.
Here are 5 bad habits you need to not have. Stop them because they can kill your business and may give the industry a negative rap.
Bad Habits #1: Telling Prospects That It Is Easy And They Can Make Money Without Doing Very Little Work
For many, network marketing is fun but easy… Not really!
Now maybe I will get some debate on that but the fact is, anything is easier if you are having fun at it. But there are systems that need to be used. They must follow time management and any network marketer who tells a prospect that they can have a successful network marketing business by doing little work is lying.
It is a business! To have a successful business, you must work.
This is one of the areas that “haters” attack the network marketing industry. The days of scribbling get 2 that get 2 that get 2 will make you rich is done.
Be honest with your prospects. Tell them there is work to it but the outcome can be financial freedom.
Bad Habits #2: It’s All About Me
I find this to be a major bad habit in network marketing… All the talk coming out of the marketer’s mouth is about him/her. While we want to let prospects know what the business has done for us, more of the conversation should be about the prospect.
Allow them room to talk and in many cases, they will give you the answer to closing them.
Bad Habits #3: It’s Not About The Person
If when your talking with someone and the conversation is one-sided about your products or the opportunity, you are committing an error that can have bad consequences.
Network marketing is about relationships.
Think of it like dating.
If you met a woman or man that invited you to a dinner and all they did was ramble about their job, their life, etc…, would you want to go on a date with them again?
Doubtful.
Have a conversation; a two-sided conversation and the conversation does not need to be 100% your business, the products or opportunity. Build a relationship and allow the conversation to flow. The products and opportunity will naturally “slide in,” and the person will respect you for not being pushy.
Bad Habits #4: Taking No Personal
The fact is, people will say no. There are many reasons why and I would bet that the majority of those reasons have nothing to do with the network marketer.
All I can say is, if you take rejection personally, you will not last long in the business and you made need therapy.
Just smile and move on and one more hint, do follow up from time to time. No today does not mean no tomorrow.
Bad Habits #5: Making Illegal Claims
This is usually made from nutrition or health MLM representatives stating their products can cure or treat health problems or diseases.
Unless you have been given a “green light” from your company, NEVER make claims that could be construed as treating, curing or fixing something if you are unsure if it is true.
This has gotten many network marketing companies in hot water.
Conclusion
Honesty and transparency go a lot further than hype and lies in network marketing. Getting a quick sale by using unscrupulous means can kill your business and harm the industry.
It is much better getting less with honesty than more with lies!
Hey, do me a favor… Share this with other network marketers so we can create a better opinion of the industry.
Thank you and have a great day.
