You may have been told by your sponsor to write a list of everyone you know; family, friends, coworkers, etc…
They will tell you to approach these people about the opportunity, and hopefully your sponsor will train you how to do so properly so you do not alienate these people… Your warm market.
At some point in time, you are going to go through that list and where do you go from there?
Now you must start prospecting in the cold market.
To define the cold market, it is essentially strangers. When you mention cold market prospecting to some network marketers, their eyes glaze over and you can just feel the fear and apprehension rolling from their aura.
This fear emits from extroverted people and even more so from introverted network marketers.
Why?
For most people, they assume they will have to use high pressure techniques and they fear rejection.
I need to first tell you 2 important messages:
- You need not use high pressure. You will find ways to have people actually asking you about the products and opportunity you promote.
- As for fear… The best way to overcome fear is to face it. Remember that a person is not rejecting you, they are rejecting their own dreams.

If you are reading this blog post and are not yet a member of Rocket Recruiting, no sweat! I will not cut you off from this valuable cold market prospecting information. But I will say that Rocket Recruiting does provide you with a slew of interactive tools to make cold market prospecting easy and fun.
Now use these tips and strategies to help you with cold market prospecting.
Cold Market Prospecting Tip #1: A Simple Ice-Breaking Formula
One of the most difficult parts of cold market prospecting is breaking the ice. But there is a simple formula.
After a brief introduction, you simply ask either about their family life or their work. This is somewhat dependent on where you are approaching this person. If they are at work, it really doesn’t make sense to ask where they work.
Here are some simple questions:
- Do you live in this area?
- Are you married? Children?
- What type of work do you do?
- Do you enjoy your work?
Now it is natural that the person will ask similar questions in return. Use an elevator statement about your position.
You may want to ask about their recreation, and from there you can move into the message of your opportunity keeping a rushed attitude.
Attain the contact info and explain how you will contact them (at a specified day and time) to provide more info.
Cold Market Prospecting Tip #2: Focus On The Prospect’s Demeanor
If you approach a person with a smile and say “Hi, how are you,” and they ignore you and look the other way, I suggest you move to another prospect.
You want to be completely aware of the demeanor and attitude of the other person.
Do not consider prospects as prey that you are hunting. Look at it more like a petting zoo. If they are open to eating from your hand, feed them. But if not, move to the next.
Cold Market Prospecting Tip #3: Do Not Go Deep On First Meeting
The primary idea in cold market prospecting is to set the pace for a proper presentation. There is no way you will be able to give a competent presentation when you first meet the person.
You want to get contact information and just give a “taste” of your opportunity. You may want to share a 3rd party tool if the prospect agrees to watch, listen or read, and you want to set up a time and day to present the opportunity completely. Also, you should always use all the 3rd party tools and your upline during presentations.
Cold Market Prospecting Tip #4: Consider Your Appearance
Just consider this, if you have a look of success, prospects will be more apt to trust you and believe you do have an opportunity that can help them.
If you look like you just crawled out of bed, will they believe in you?
If you dress successfully, you will be successful.
Cold Market Prospecting Tip #5: Consider The Cold Market Prospect A Warm Market Prospect
I find this tip helps introverts in an amazing way.
When you approach a stranger, assume in your mind and act like they are a long lost friend.
When you go into this with that attitude, you will be astounded as to the attitude of these strangers. And it is because of the aura you are giving out.
It works!
Cold Market Prospecting Tip #6: Keep It About Them
The cold market conversation needs to be focused on the prospect. While they will ask about you, be brief and take it back to them.
The fact is, people want to talk about themselves, but they often need your okay that they can do so. Give them that assurance and build the prospect’s trust.
Conclusion
Just get out and talk with people. It really is not hard, so break the fear.
I challenge you to speak with 3 strangers in the next 6 hours. Just practice introducing yourself and making small talk.
